Ignorance and prejudice had a baby...
In the shadowy recesses of their minds, anti-mask protestors now see themselves as victims, much like European Jews forced to wear yellow Stars of David to mark selection for the Nazi gas chambers.
Anchorage anti-maskers are abusing history as well as facts in protesting a proposed ordinance requiring masks at indoor events to curb the spread of COVID. Somehow in their own minds, this ordinance became comparable to the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews. In their make-believe world, the role of Jews marked for murder is played by the anti-maskers themselves, wearing yellow Stars of David, as Jews were forced to do in Nazi-occupied Europe.
The anti-maskers did this protesting an ordinance that will save lives, not mark them for extinction. Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson initially backed this tortured symbolic logic, calling it “a credit to the Jews.” Later he backed off, with a classic faux apology, saying “If I offended anyone, I am truly sorry.” Apparently he is not sorry for backing a grotesque misinterpretation of history.
This cartoon relies more heavily on exposition than would be ideal, but I wanted to be careful with the possibility of the reader misinterpreting the Star of David as labeling the protestor as Jewish. Hence the explainer box in the left upper corner.
