An old adage holds that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. In the case of the Oath Keepers, even that distinction seems to be strained.
This drawing is an example of the slippery nature of inspiration. I wanted to do a cartoon on the Rep. David Eastman saga running through this week’s news. Eastman is in hot water over his lifetime membership in the Oath Keepers, a group whose leaders have been charged with sedition in connection with the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Eastman has not disassociated himself from the group and is arguably in violation of a loyalty clause in the Alaska Constitution that says anyone belonging to a group that tries to overthrow the government by force is disqualified from public service. His colleagues in the State House are debating what to do with him, and that hot water he is in looks more tepid all the time. But for some reason I couldn’t come up with a cartoon idea that successfully lampooned the situation.
In the course of looking up information on the Oath Keepers, I saw numerous photos of their indicted leader with his melodramatic eye patch, and inspiration struck. Not the inspiration I was looking for, but who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth? I will come back to Eastman later.
